The faculty of arts has three departments, viz., Department of Sculpture, Department of Music and Department of Drama.

Department of Music

Objectives

  1. To undertake research study on the origin and development of music and the role of Tamil music in the broader context of Indian Music and World Music.
  2. To analyse the role of music from inter-disciplinary perspectives with Literature, Dance, Dance-Dramas, Sculpture and Archaeology and other relevant science subjects such as Physics, Maths, Computer Science and Medicine.
  3. To popularise rare Tamil Musical compositions by conducting Annual Music competitions, organising seminars and endowment lectures.
  4. To identify and restructure the musical forms as found in the ancient Tamil literature
  5. To preserve the musical contributions, photos and recordings of the traditional musicians, musicologists and to collect rare musical instruments.
  6. To encourage students to undertake high level research study on Music leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees.
  7. To impart practical training on Classical music, dance forms and folk music.
  8. To introduce and popularize music teaching in under graduate and Post graduate levels.

Department of Drama

Objectives

The Department of Drama, under the Faculty of Fine Arts strives hard to achieve the goal and the basic systems of Tamil University and to uphold the concept and tradition of the Tamil University.

The main aim of the Department is to serve as an inspirational force to the language theatre of this region, i.e., Tamil Theatre, in involving innovative and creative moments by rediscovering traditional theatrical elements through conducting profound research studies, interacting with modern theatre concepts and indulging in experimental and traditional play production. It also aims to function as a high level research centre to regulate research activities through theatrical studies, experimental projects and extension programmes in the area of theatre.

  1. To facilitate theatre artists, researchers and theatre enthusiasts of Tamil theatre to understand universal theories and concepts of modern theatre practice.
  2. To document the traditional and modern theatrical forms and techniques with the preparation of Drama encyclopaedia and dictionaries.
  3. To chanatize traditional Tamil literary worker.
  4. To promote traditional theatre
  5. To promote children’s theatre.
  6. To co-ordinate various play troupes
  7. The department has an action plan to promote modern theatre sensibilities without losing the life and spirit of our traditional theatre elements.

Kootukkalari- Course in Performing Arts

As part of our extension programme a course for performing arts namely ‘Kootukkalari’ was started in the year 2010. It conducts three year degree course for students who have completed higher secondary (+2) course. It is a full time course framed with theory and practice in mind. Now six students are undergoing this programme. It gives deep training in various arts forms including karagam, kavadi, dummy horse, thappattam and Thevarattam. Experts in the field are appointed in temporary basis as trainees in arts.

Faculty of Manuscriptology 

The Faculty of Manuscriptology has four departments. They are Department of Palm leaf Manuscripts, Department of Epigraphy and Archaeology, Department of Epigraphy and Archaeology and Department of Rare Paper Manuscripts.

Objectives

  1. Collection of Palm leaf manuscripts
  2. Preservation of Palm leaf manuscripts using new scientific techniques
  3. Preservation of rare manuscripts through digitization and microfilming
  4. Establishment and management of Palm leaf archives
  5. Publication of books based on the information found in the manuscripts, (translation with notes and commentaries )
  6. Publication of the information related humanities and science from the Palm-leaf manuscripts, and conducting workshops for the benefit of the public.

Achievements

  • The Department has collected more than 8000 palm leaf manuscripts covering several subjects such as Philosophy, medicine, astrology, grammar and Sangam literature. Among these 6410 are Tamil works.
  • More than 58 books have been published by the faculty members
  • The Department has organized 19 seminars, 18 workshops and 1 refresher course.
  • Descriptive catalogs of the manuscripts have been prepared: 8 volumes containing 400 titles of manuscripts have been published. Two volumes with 1000 titles are ready to be published.

Department of Epigraphy and Archaeology 

Objectives

  1. To study the culture and civilization of south India using archaeological and epigraphical sources.
  2. To collect, document, preserve, analyze, edit and publish inscriptions, copper plates and related documents pertaining to the history of Tamil Nadu.
  3. To explore and explore sites of archaeological importance to augment the cultural history of Tamil Nadu.
  4. To understand the antiquity of Tamil Nadu both in time and space to study the political, social and economic development of Tamil Nadu using primarily archaeological and epigraphical sources.
  5. To prepare a digital Historical atlas of Tamil Nadu

Achievements

  • The Department has discovered oldest Tamil -Brahmi inscriptions on herostones at Pulimankombai, Thathapatti and Porpanaikottai. Theses are milestone discoveries in the archaeology of Tamil nadu.
  • The Department has excavated the archaeological sites of Vallam, Periypattinam, Kodumanal, Mayiladumparai, Thandikkudi, Nagapattinam and Pillayarpatti.

Department of Maritime History and Marine Archaeology

 Objectives

  1. To explore the submerged and partially submerged ancient port cities in Tamil Nadu Coast.
  2. To explore, retrieve and preserve the ancient Shipwrecks.
  3. To find and salvage ancient stone and metal anchors to study the boat and ship parameters.
  4. To Study the traditional navigation system.

Department of Translation

This is the only Department in Tamil Nadu for Translation at University level.

Objectives

  1. To translate Tamil literature into other languages and vice-versa.
  2. To evaluate the existing translation of Tamil Literature in other languages
  3. To evaluate the literary and non-literary translation works of other languages into Tamil
  4. To organise refresher courses, seminars, workshops, guest lectures and training programmes for teachers and professionals at various levels.
  5. To work on Tamil translation theory and to bring out books on theories in translation.
  6. To prepare a series of bibliographies related to translation and to maintain a documentation centre to store all available materials in translation related to Tamil.

Department of Lexicography

Objectives

Important aims of this department as are follows:

  1. To impart Lexicographic knowledge and training among school, college and university teachers and research scholars in Indian Languages, especially in Tamil.
  2. To inculcate lexicographic principles among students in order to promote their language skills.
  3. To compile basic reference works, which will be useful to Tamil language and literacy, research activities.
  4. To establish an archive consisting of rare Nighantus and Tamil dictionaries.
  5. To compile bilingual and multilingual dictionaries with Tamil as source language.
  6. To promote interdisciplinary lexicographic activities by compiling Scientific and Technical dictionaries.
  7. To propagate the use of ‘computers’ in dictionary making and to evolve principles for computerized Tamil Lexicography.
  8. To prepare a complete ‘Database’ of Tamil classical vocabulary ranging from Sangam literature to Modern Tamil.
  9. To publish different types of Tamil Encyclopaedia and Indices.

Objectives

School of Philosophy

Objectives

  1. The school aims to carry out the advanced research on Indian traditional thought and thinkers with special reference to Tamil sources.
  2. To develop Tamil in the fields of Philosophy, Religion, Temple studies, Culture, Aesthetics, Ethics and Applied Ethics and Tourism through research and publication of textbooks.
  3. The School of Philosophy will give greater support and emphasize upon Inter disciplinary researches under the domain of Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Science and Philosophy of Arts et,. For this, we have the support of the cooperation from various Departments of University.
  4. This School will concentrate on the comparative study of Eastern and Western thought in Tamil Language.
  5. The School of Philosophy plans to organised seminars on various religions to project their social relevance in this multilingual country.
  6. The School of Philosophy provides greater “Opportunity to do researches on the critical study on Social, Cultural, Spiritual and Moral issues-facing our nation. This center will under take a series of projects to highlight this relation between society and temples. For this, the center undertakes the work on temple encyclopedia also; the School of Philosophy gives special attention to the study and research on Indian aesthetics. .
  7. To make an in-depth study of the Religio-Philosophy of Saivism and Vaishnavism with special reference to the social relevance of the Tamil canonical literature.
  8. To translate the works of significant Tamil Philosophical Treatises in to English and other Indian language.
  9. To undertake high-level research on the profound thoughts and thinkers of Indian Philosophical and Religious Tradition in Tamil.
  10. To promote Religious Harmony, Inter-Religious dialogue and Comparative Study of Religions.
  11. To study the Religious, Philosophical and Aesthetic aspects of the Temples for the promotion of Temple Arts and Culture.

Objectives

  1. The Department envisages to undertake comprehensive studies relating to tribal communities of Tamil Nadu.

Department of Ancient Science

Department of Ancient Science was started in the year 1983. 

Objectives

  1. To collect, identify and document the esoteric ancient systems, scientific, tradition, skills and technology of Tamils from different branches of Science, such as Agriculture, Astronomy, Mathematics, Animal Science, Plant Science, Marine Science, Physical Science and validating this knowledge in the context of the modern scientific knowledge.
  2. To conduct research to bring those facts and figures to local community scientific community and global information community.
  3. To encourage research on indigenous culture and cultural properties and facilitate the documentation, storage retrieve and use of indigenous knowledge which are eco-friendly and applicable to the modern society.

Department of Industries and Earth Sciences

Objectives

  1. To  establish a scientifically and an industrially well advanced condition, especially in the field of earth sciences like geology, geography, oceanography, environmental management and augment the scientific manpower build-up in earth sciences for natural resource management, conservation and preservation.
  2. For establishing an advanced research centre in the fields of marine studies, especially in pollution monitoring, coastal zone management, coastal mining and mineral resource management, remote sensing, applied geomorphology, etc., which help to look after the welfare of Tamil Nadu.
  3. For studying the similarity and compatibility of the ancient science and technology developments of Tamil Nadu in relation to the other parts of the world and harness the different techniques for modern industrial usage.
  4. For collecting sufficient data on the basis of experimental science for reconstructing the traditional scientific and industrial techniques so as to popularise the same adopted by our ancestors.

Objectives

  1. To carry out research, projects, teaching programme and extension activities in Environmental and Herbal Sciences.
  2. To undertake research in the field on Environmental Pollution, Natural Resources, Environmental Impact Assessment and Management and Disaster Management.
  3. To address Environmental issues at Regional, National and International levels.
  4. To undertake research in all areas related to Herbal Sciences like Botany, Pharmacognosy, Ethno botany, Phytochemistry and Pharmacology.
  5. Identification, collection, conservation of Indian medicinal plants and maintenance of Herbal Garden. Propagation of rare and endangered Medicinal plants using modern techniques like Plant Tissue Culture.
  6. To undertake multidisciplinary research on medicinal plants and help in standardisation of herbal drugs and creating value added herbal products.
